“Implicit & Explicit Aspects of Athletic Development”

Understanding the cognitive architecture underpinning implicit and explicit processing within the brain helps the strength and conditioning coach to link athletic development training with desired sports performance. Assessment, maturational development and the utility of such information will be discussed in the context of motor skill development within a premier league football academy.

Biography:

James is the Head of Academy Performance at Sunderland AFC having previously worked as a sports scientist/strength and conditioning coach for the past 8 years in a diverse range of professional and university sports. James studied towards undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Kinesiology and Exercise Science at the University of Texas before completing a PhD examining implicit and explicit cognitive processes during athletic performance at the University of Lincoln. James is currently investigating how contemporary motor learning principles can optimize athleticism in professional football.
